Allergies

Allergies are an abnormal response of the immune system. People who have allergies have an immune system that reacts to a usually harmless substance in the environment. This substance (pollen, mold, animal dander, etc.) is called an allergen.

Allergies are a very common problem, affecting at least two out of every 10 Americans. Almost anything can trigger an allergic reaction. Taking too much allergy medication (excessive use) is very likely to cause you immunitary prooblems for your health system. However, if you follow a strict medical prescription you're very likely to be headed right. Most americans look for natural remedies to help ease their allergies.

Treatment

Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) require treatment with a medicine called epinephrine, which can be life saving when immediately given.

The best way to reduce symptoms is to try and avoid what causes your allergies in the first place. This is especially important for food and drug allergies.

There are several types of medications available to prevent and treat allergies. Which medicine your doctor recommends depends on the type and severity of your symptoms, your age, and overall health.

Specific illnesses that are caused by allergies (such as asthma, hay fever, and eczema) may require other treatments.

Medications that can be used to treat allergies include:

ANTIHISTAMINES

Antihistamines are available over-the-counter and by prescription. They are available in many forms, including:
Capsules and pills
Eye drops
Injection
Liquid
Nasal spray

CORTICOSTEROIDS

Anti-inflammatory medications (corticosteroids) are available in many forms, including:
Creams and ointment for the skin
Eye drops
Nasal spray
Lung inhaler
Patients with severe allergic symptoms may be prescribed corticosteroid pills or injections for short periods of time.

DECONGESTANTS

Decongestants can help relieve a stuffy nose. Decongestant nasal spray should not be used for more than several days, because they can cause a "rebound" effect and make the congestion worse. Decongestants in pill form do not cause this problem.

Saline Nasal Sprays/Rinses
If you suffer from allergies, perhaps you’re seeking some natural remedies to treat your congested nose and scratchy throat. Many allergy sufferers opt for natural remedies, especially if they’re not finding effective relief with allergy medicines and treatments.

While the results of studies vary, saline nasal sprays may give you nasal allergy relief. Some studies support the use of saline solution (salt water) to restore moisture to dry nasal passages and sinuses and to lessen the inflammation of mucous membranes. Findings show that if saline irrigation is used regularly, it can help to thin mucus, decrease postnasal drip, and cleanse your nasal passages of bacteria.

Blood test can predict whether newborn babies are at high risk of developing allergies.

A protein in the immune cells of newborns appears to hold the answer as to whether a baby will either be protected, or susceptible to the development of allergies later on. Amounts of the cell signalling protein, called protein kinase C zeta, are much lower in children at risk of allergies. The researchers are also looking at whether fish oil supplements given to both pregnant women and those who have just given birth can reduce the risks of the children developing allergies.
